  • The Beginning of a Godless Belonging

Welcome, beloved reader. Whether you arrived here by accident, rebellion, or raw necessity—know this: you're not alone anymore. You’ve found The Godless Kind . We are a community of sacred dissenters—thinkers, feelers, doubters, and survivors. Co-founded by myself, Susan Courtney, and my colleague and co-creator, Robert Peoples, this space was born from a shared hunger for honesty, depth, and human dignity beyond the confines of religion. We both know the cost of asking hard questions in places where only obedience was welcome. We’ve walked away from systems that promised salvation but demanded our silence and stole our agency. And we’ve sat in the ruins—grieving what was lost and slowly rebuilding something more grounded, more human, and more free. This is that rebuild. At The Godless Kind , we are creating space for: The ache of religious deconstruction and the beauty of self-reclamation Humanist ethics and meaning-making without invoking the divine Conversations that confront patriarchy, white supremacy, heteronormativity, and spiritual abuse Affirmations, tools, and resources for navigating life after religion and rediscovering the self The celebration of autonomy, reason, empathy, love, and joy—on your terms But more than content, this is community . We understand how isolating it can be to leave behind faith structures, especially when religion once shaped your identity, family, or sense of purpose. We know how confusing and painful it can be to reconstruct your values without the fear of divine punishment or eternal reward. That’s why we’re not just writing to you—we’re walking with you. We want T he Godless Kind to be a resource, yes—but more than that, we want it to be a relationship. A dialogue. A place of belonging. If you don’t see a topic addressed that you’re struggling with, please reach out and ask. Whether you're navigating grief, exploring your sexuality, raising kids after deconversion, unpacking religious trauma, or simply trying to put language to your evolving worldview—we want to help. And if we don’t yet have what you need, we’ll find it—or we’ll create it.This space belongs to you , too. We are The Godless Kind —not because we are without spirit, but because we reject systems that demand we surrender our humanity. We believe in building lives of meaning rooted in reality, relationships, and radical compassion. We are deeply human. Fiercely free. And still worthy of reverence—just as we are. As Rob always says, " To be human is enough ." And this? This is only the beginning. With fire, clarity, and truth, Susan Courtney & Robert Peoples Co-Founders, The Godless Kind

  • What is Secular Humanism?

If you’ve found your way here, you might be wondering what secular humanism actually means. Maybe you’ve left religion—or it left you.Maybe you’ve started asking questions that no one in your faith community wanted to answer.Maybe you still believe in love, justice, goodness, and beauty… but you’re done believing in gods. If so, welcome. You’re not broken. You’re becoming. Secular humanism is a worldview built on human dignity, critical thinking, and a commitment to making meaning here and now—without supernatural beliefs. It's about living ethically, not because we fear divine punishment, but because we care about each other. Here are the core ideas: Reason over Revelation Secular humanists value science, evidence, and rational thought. We don’t accept ideas just because they’re old, sacred, or popular—we examine them. We’re not afraid of asking hard questions or changing our minds. Ethics Without a Deity You don’t need a god to be good. Our morality doesn’t come from ancient texts or authority figures—it comes from empathy, experience, and our shared responsibility to reduce harm and increase well-being. This Life Matters Most We don’t believe in an afterlife—and that’s precisely why this life is so precious. We don’t live for heaven; we live for each other, for justice, for joy, for the world we can build together. Freedom of Belief Secular humanism protects the right to believe—or not believe. We oppose religious coercion and support the separation of church and state. You should be free to define your own meaning, without fear or shame. Action Over Prayer We don’t wait for divine intervention. When there is injustice, we speak. When there is suffering, we act. When there is love to be made visible, we show up. So… is it a religion? No. Secular humanism is a life stance , not a religion . There are no creeds, no gods, no clergy. Just people—flawed, beautiful, thinking, growing people—doing the work of building meaningful lives without myth. It’s a way of living that says: “I am responsible for what I do with this one, wild, sacred life—and I choose to live it consciously, compassionately, and courageously.” At The Godless Kind , we root our community in secular humanist values. We are committed to helping each other heal, grow, and thrive without needing to fit into someone else’s belief system. Whether you’re new to deconstruction or you’ve been walking this road for years, know this: You are not alone. You don’t need gods to be whole. You don’t need faith to be free. You don’t need religion to be good . You are enough. And this world is still worth showing up for. Welcome to secular humanism. Welcome to The Godless Kind .
