Christian culture teaches us that the answer to pain is prayer. Anxiety is met with faith. Anger is moralized. Grief is softened by trust. What it does not teach is how to cope. When belief collapses, the emotional system built around it collapses too—not because God was necessary, but because emotional skill-building was replaced by faith. The pain that follows deconstruction isn’t failure. It’s exposure.

Spiritual bypassing is the habit of using faith, prayer, or positivity to avoid feeling pain. Instead of processing grief, anger, or fear, we explain it away with phrases like “God has a plan” or “Just have faith.” This may sound comforting, but it shuts down emotional growth. Healing doesn’t come from skipping pain—it comes from naming it, feeling it, and responding with real tools, support, and self-compassion.
